Mekelle is the capital of the Tigray Region and home to Ayder Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, the region's main teaching and referral hospital. The conflict of recent years severely disrupted health services across Tigray: supply lines, power, connectivity and records were all affected, and hospitals and health centers are still rebuilding.
